What other types of support are available?

This varies from community to community, but there are Community Care Access Centres and Palliative Pain and Symptom Management specialists or teams responsible for every area of Ontario.

Some of the supports available for individuals living with a life-threatening disease are:

  • Complementary therapies
  • Day programs
  • Friendly visiting
  • Lending libraries
  • Physical and practical support
  • Psychological, social, emotional and spiritual support
  • Support groups
  • Transportation to/from medical appointments

Families and friends can also find resources to help them cope, for example:

  • Grief and bereavement (both group and individual support)
  • Respite care
  • Special programs for children and teens
  • Support groups

Many communities also have representatives from the Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Association, ALS Society, Lung Association and other similar organizations. More information can be found in our “Links” section.
